Christmas Nativity Tour of Friuli Venezia-Giulia
Ara (Udine) – was at the centre of a huge earthquake in 1976 that destroyed large parts of this town. Started during the period when the town’s residents were living under canopies whilst their homes were being rebuilt, this is one of the largest nativity scenes in north east Italy. With a different theme every year, construction is carried out by local volunteers and takes around 6 months to build. It is available to view between 24th December and 25th January.
Brazzacco (UD) – this ‘living’ nativity takes places against the stunning backdrop of Brazzacco Superiore Castle. Performances take place over the 24th and 25th December with at least 120 people taking part wearing around 300 different costumes between them.
Castelmonte (UD) - a large nativity scene can be seen in the crypt of the Sanctuary of the Capuchin Fathers.
Cormons (GO) – the nativity scene here is found among the local vineyards which are a key characteristic of this region.
Corgnolo (UD) – where over 300 statues wearing handmade costumes can be found dotted around this rural town between 23rd and 15th January. For the best view, visit at night when the statues are atmospherically lit.
Cornino (UD) – on 24th December after Mass, a crib can be seen floating on the clear waters of the lake. Available to see until 6th January.
Gemona del Friuli (UD) – on the special initiative of the School of Santa Maria of the Angels sees celebrities invited to hand paint the plaster figures that go in the crib alongside those painted by the local children. Past guest artists have included Raffaella Carrà, Laura Pausini, Giorgio Armani and Luciano Pavarotti.
Lignano (UD) – offers an interesting twist on the traditional nativity scene, this crib is built with sand on the beach next to the water’s edge.
Perteole (UD) – has an ancient animated crib which reconstructs scenes of ancient Palestine at the time of Jesus, today includes modern computer synchronization to complete the effects. The statues are decorated by hand and named in remembrance of past village residents.
Poffabro (PN) – from 15th December to 15th January: This picturesque snow covered village is the setting for numerous nativity scenes tucked away in courtyards, balconies and hidden corners. Attracting crowds of visitors every year, this event turns the village into a spectacular outdoor museum.
Ravascletto (UD) – in the Church of Santa Spirito there is a nativity scene made of delicate Murano glass dating back to the time of the Cramârs, ancient traders who sold spices and lived in this area.
Sesto al Reghena (PN) – a crazy mix of 200 actors, 3 horses, 28 sheep, 70 collaborators, an ox, a donkey and two boats. This living nativity scene takes place in the beautiful setting of the Abbey between 24th and 26th December.
Sistiana (TS) – in the village of San Mauro this nativity display can be found in a cave.
Sutrio (UD) – is a town famous for woodwork, between 21st December and 6th January becomes a showcase for around 70 nativity scenes. The most famous is that of Teno, a permament work that operates using a series of mechanical gears.
Tapogliano (UD) – made from handpainted stones from the river, this Nativity display can be found in the Santa Margherita Church.
Trieste – don’t miss the crib placed in a boat on Christmas Day on the Grand Canal of Ponterosso.
