A Stroll Around the Cagliari Christmas Market
Strawberry honey, Amaro liqueur, or 'torrone' chocolate bars are just some of the items to tempt your taste buds. If the food and drink on offer is not enough, you will also be dazzled by the bright displays of woollen rugs, hand-painted pottery and even handcrafted knives, all examples of traditional Sardinian products.
The market at Cagliari is held every December and is an occasion when stallholders come together to share the holiday spirit and display their wares. It is held in the centre of the town, a short distance from the port area, not far from the famous Poetto beach. The warm climate of this Mediterranean Island, especially around the coast, creates an atmosphere slightly different to the classical snow-filled postcard scenes of a Christmas market and you may even get to enjoy some sunshine during your visit.
The bright colours of the handmade crafts mix with the scent of the food stalls. Fresh bread, salami, wine and the island’s main product, pecorino cheese, are all there to be sampled and savoured. There are also fish products, including tuna and mullet roe, perfect for putting in a Christmas hamper.
Then there are handcrafted products, traditionally made with a pinch of imagination and innovation for a really unique Christmas present idea? Specialities include filigree jewellery detailed with exquisite circles and spirals as well as a variety of home accessories such as wicker baskets, wooden chests, pottery and rugs.
After a hard day’s shopping, why not relax and enjoy some local cuisine? Or just simply relax and enjoy the views of the sea that surround this coastal town.
