Christmas in Bolzano, a dive into Magic
As the cold weather approaches and the end of year looms large in the calendar, Bolzano is transformed and ready to celebrate the Christmas season.
The streets in the centre are festooned with decorations, a mix of bright colours and music that characterise this time of year. The historic centre is filled with Christmas lights, and the smells of spices especially cinnamon invade the streets. In every corner, you can hear traditional Christmas carols and songs. The cold air contrasts against the warm candles, as the evening darkness creates a magical atmosphere in the small streets and piazzas, captivating tourists with its fairytale charm.
There are several markets but without a doubt, the main one is the Christkindmarkt, that runs from the end of November to just before Christmas in the central square, the Piazza Walther. The market was started in 1990 and was the first of its type in Italy. Around 80 wooden huts set up shop amidst the decorated piazza displaying their products. A mix of locally-made crafts including glassware, food and ceramics, make ideal gifts to take home, or simply enjoy the homemade cakes which show the blend of middle European and Mediterranean influences that characterise this region. Look out for the famous Zelten made with candid peel and the classic apple strudel, or simply take your pick from the many other homemade desserts on show.
Alongside the main market, Christmas festivities have spread to other parts of the city. In Piazza Municipio, there is a Handicrafts Market where you can find handmade wooden decorations, in Palais Campofranco, just next to Piazza Walter, there is the Enchanted Forest. This is a traditionally Austrian affair, where you can browse wooden stalls in the courtyard of an ancient piazza and choose from gastronomic specialities, clothing and typical alpine products.
Finally, if that were not enough, look out for the information kiosks dotted around the streets where local organisations display information about their services and projects.
The market starts during the last weekend of November.
