A biking route in Valsugana, in Trentino, boasts unspoilt nature and stops allowing you to taste some of the region’s specialities, from the local dumpling dish, “canederli” to Valsugana polenta.

Clusters between Lagorai in the north and the high planes of Asiago in the south, Valsugana is situated in the eastern area of Trentino, at around 20km from Trento. Following the main road east and coasting the river Brenta, lies area’s first large inhabited town, Pergine Valsugana, situated very close to Caldonazzo Lake. Trains also run from Trento to the towns of Pergine Valsugana and Caldonazzo.

From the banks of the lake there is a cycle path which runs all the way to Bassano del Grappa in Veneto. The route extends mainly through natural surroundings, which for long stretches coasts the river, which crosses some of the urban areas, however with little traffic.

The Valsugana cycle-path is suitable for bike lovers of all ages and levels, and also attracts those wishing to sample excellent local cuisine….along the route are located many “bici-grill” serving great food and information on nearby restaurants.

One of the recommended restaurants is La Malga Baessa in Telve Valsugana, situated in Val Calamento (tel.0461.766041). The great family-run restaurant serves tasty food, where you should let the owners advise you on what to eat and you will not be disappointed! Try out their delicious dumplings “canerdli” in cooked in butter, vegetables and Trentino cheese, Grana.

Naturally, you cannot miss out on Valsugana polenta, famous throughout Italy! If you happen to be in Borgo Valsugana in May, the ideal month for cycle tours of the area, then you will encounter a village food fest, called “Strada della Polenta” celebrating this traditional local dish.
