Discovering Orbetello

In Tuscany Grosseto Surroundings Orbetello Art and Culture Food and Wine Nature and Outdoors
If you are looking to find a mix of countryside, history, culture, gastronomy all set in a picturesque nature reserve, look no further than the ancient town of Orbetello, located in Tuscany's most southerly point.

One of the most popular places to visit in Tuscany, Italy, is undoubtedly the suggestive Orbetello, a town located in the most south-western point of the region.  Around 40km from Grosseto, Orbetello sits in the middle of a lagoon between Monte Argentario and the mainland. It is part of an internationally-renowned nature reserve. Its location on a thin strip of land surrounded by water makes this a unique place to visit in Italy and provides its visitors with picture postcard views.

As well as the scenery, it also has much to offer in terms of its rich history that has left a legacy that can still be enjoyed today.  The ancient walls (4thcentury BC) date back to Etruscan times and have remained partially intact, whilst testament to  pre-Roman times, you can admire the Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta or the Palazzo del Podestà with its tower that stands at 25m tall, proudly displaying a coat of arms.

This mix of archaeological and natural interest makes Orbetello an ideal destination for those who want to enjoy a break in a rural setting and experience a rich mix of historical and artistic  gems as well as the great outdoors.

The beauty of the fauna and flora that surround the lagoon will seduce you with its charm, whilst the local cuisine will certainly keep you busy as you choose from the many local restaurants set in farmhouses around the area or within the town. Try the mullet and eel for a real taste of local cooking.  Then why not enjoy a local event like the annual rowing competition that takes place on the lake, a tradition that dates back to 1768.
