The Luminara of San Ranieri Festival, Pisa

A holiday in Tuscany is a chance not only to discover the scenic countryside, gastronomy and fascinating art but also to enjoy some of the local traditions and culture including the many regional festivals. One of these that should not be missed is the Luminara Festival of San Ranieri, a celebration by candlelight to honour the city of Pisa’s patron saint.

Whilst Pisa is best known for its Leaning Tower, this festival is one of the city’s most recognised attractions on June 16th. Join the crowds that line up along the Arno River as dusk falls and the celebrations start.

In total around 70,000 wax candles are lit, placed in special glass cups and set out strategically around the buildings that overlook the river or placed on small boats. Their soft flickering light reflects on the water and creates a fairytale atmosphere. The bell tower of the Duomo (better known as the Leaning Tower of Pisa) is also lit but with ancient oil lamps rather than candles and the magical moment of the evening is without doubt when the top of the tower lights up amidst the reflections of the candle-lit river.

Historically this event, which attracts thousands of visitors every year, dates back to the time of Cosimo III dei Medici in the 17th century. Cosimo wanted to replace the ancient urn that held the remains of Saint Ranieri, following his death in 1611, and saw the inauguration of a new more modern urn as an excuse to create a memorable festival that became known as ‘enlightenment’.
