The town of Pistoia, around 30km west of Florence, is best known for its architecture and historic buildings. Yet in the month of July, the streets of this usually quiet medieval town are filled with music, dance and entertainment as the Blues Festival comes to the popular Tuscany region of Italy.

The town of Pistoia is centred around the magnificent Piazza Duomo, where the unique 14th century baptistery and the Cathedral dominate the picturesque town square. This is where the music celebrations take place to the delight of blues aficionados and newcomers alike during the Blues Festival which has earned world-wide recognition.

A prestigious line-up of names have graced its stage since the event started in 1980, including Ray Charles, BB King, Fats Domino, Muddy Waters, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan and Lenny Kravtiz.

Three days of concerts are held starting on the Friday in the second weekend of July filling the town with a vibrant atmosphere. Along with the music, the streets are lined with market stalls selling ethnic goods and spices. The stalls’ bright colours and spicy scents create a vibrant backdrop for the festival as the vendors display their wares. Look out for handmade drums made of leather and wood, the sounds of which echo through the historic streets. You can also taste local products at the delicatessen stalls selling salami, cheese and local wines and spirits.

The Blues Festival is an opportunity to see another side of this city that is usually characterised by its ancient charm and serene atmosphere, and to experience some fun and entertainment during your stay in Tuscany.
