Events in Umbria: Easter at Assisi and Gubbio
Spending Easter at Assisi is a great occasion to visit many of then numerous sacred locations of the city, including the famous basilicas of San Francesco and Santa Chiara, and also to attend the celebrations of the Holy Week. The most impressive celebration is without doubt the procession of Good Friday, which starts off at San Rufino and, after having stopped off at all of the convents of the city and the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, ends in the evening when its reaches the Basilica of San Francesco, accompanied by the diverse medieval fraternities by torch-light.
Also at Gubbio, a procession of ancient origins (8th century) takes place, representing the Passion of Christ, where the Sacconi, so-called due to their costumes which resemble sacks and members of religious fraternities, show symbols of the Passion of Christ preceded with a statue of Christ on the cross and the Madonna Addolorata. The procession is led throughout the streets of Gubbio, illuminated by torches and accompanied by choruses singing the Miserere.
